Metal probably suits you if

  • You plan to stay long enough for the service life to matter
  • You have already replaced a roof once and would rather not do it again
  • Your roof is reasonably straightforward in shape
  • You want lower ongoing maintenance

Is a metal roof noisy in rain?
Not on a house. The noise reputation comes from metal laid over open framing with nothing beneath it, which is how barns and sheds are built. A residential metal roof goes on over solid decking with underlayment, and that assembly deadens impact. Standing next to a window in a downpour, the difference from shingles is minor.

Will a metal roof make my house hotter in summer?
Generally the opposite. Metal reflects more solar radiation than a dark asphalt surface absorbs, and most residential systems leave an air gap and a ventilation path behind the panel so heat is carried away rather than pushed into the attic. Attic ventilation still matters, and it is worth checking while the roof is off.

Can metal go over my existing shingles?
Sometimes, and it saves the cost of a tear-off. It depends on the condition of the decking underneath, how many layers are already up there, and what your municipality allows. The trade is that nobody sees the deck, so soft sheathing stays where it is. That decision follows an inspection rather than preceding it.

How long does a metal roof last in Calgary?
Longer than asphalt by a wide margin, but the number that actually matters is the coating warranty rather than the steel itself. Ask for the specific warranty document on the product being quoted, not a figure from a brochure, and read what it covers — fade, chalk and perforation are usually three separate terms.

Does a metal roof dent in hail?
It can, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling. The useful distinction is cosmetic against functional: a dent that changes how the panel looks is not the same as damage that breaks the coating or lets water in. Profile, gauge and the substrate underneath all change how a panel takes an impact from hail.
